Metadata

The Europeana Data Model (EDM) is an interoperable framework that allows us to collect, connect and enrich cultural heritage metadata. These pages provide information and guidance on how to map your data to the Europeana Data Model before delivery.

Welcome to the first online course on EDM!

The aim of this course is for you to understand why the Europeana Foundation developed the Europeana Data Model (EDM), how it works, how you can get a bunch of nice EDM records from a bunch of MARC21 records, and what’s best practice in creating EDM mappings.

EDM mappings, refinements and extensions

Here is an overview of all the EDM mappings, refinements or extensions developed by Europeana and its data providers. Note that these profiles are not supported by Europeana for data submission.

EDM case studies

Designing extensive EDM records

Designing extensive EDM records

This case study presents the work performed on the Universitätsbibliothek Heidelberg collections, with the outcome of implementing IIIF features and greatly improved metadata quality.

EDM in the learning context

EDM in the learning context

This case study looks at two initiatives that have found EDM a useful resource for teaching professionals and students about metadata and linked open data.

Linking History and EDM

Linking History and EDM

The Linking History site is a research tool for students participating in the History in Place project. The project's data has been modelled using EDM.

Carare and EDM

Carare and EDM

This case study details the mappings decisions the CARARE project had to take when converting data in EDM. It discusses the creation of identifiers for resources, the representation of archaeological objects and the cultural objects related to them, and the representation of entities for places.

Europeana LOD pilot

Europeana LOD pilot

The Europeana Linked Open Data pilot illustrates how EDM can be used for publishing linked data. The case study develops the lessons learned from porting legacy (ESE) metadata into EDM.

MIMO and EDM

MIMO and EDM

This case study shows how to attach several digital representations to one cultural heritage object, how to link your resources to external Linked Open Data vocabularies and also discusses other mappings specificities.

EDM – FRBRoo Application Profile

EDM – FRBRoo Application Profile

This Task Force delivered combined models in terms of properties and classes of EDM and FRBRoo illustrated by sample data. Smaller groups have worked on three different examples. The report also provides principles for modeling and mapping rules based on the experiments of the working groups.
