Europeana Foundation

Why it exists.

Europeana Foundation is the organisation appointed by the European Commission to develop and run a digital cultural heritage platform for Europe (Europeana Collections).

How it differs from the Europeana Initiative.

Foundation staff are the appointed representatives who execute the practical, funded and organisational work of the Europeana Initiative. In practice, this could be running campaigns for culture, curating image galleries, developing technical frameworks, ingesting data or designing websites.

Foundation staff represent around 20 different nationalities and work mainly in The Hague. Read more about them, their teams and unique roles, on the staff page.

How it  operates within the Europeana Initiative.

Our culture.

'At Europeana Foundation we are in the business of supporting people to learn, grow, make a difference and have fun along the way. We work each day to inspire those around us to serve amazing clients, provide exceptional service and shape our communities because we believe that culture is a catalyst for socio-economic change.'

Zubia Naqvi, CCO Europeana Foundation

How do we work day-to-day? Everyone’s opinion is valued. Our strategy and business plans, as well as our day-to-day working, are products of our collective minds.

Who are we, and how is that reflected in our culture?

  • We’re friendly. We say good morning. We have coffee and lunch together. We socialise together and rely on each other. We are warm and welcome and enjoy being around each other.
  • We recognise that we can always be better. We have strong opinions and are open to new perspectives.
  • We take the initiative to improve ourselves, our Foundation and our community because we know that culture has transformative powers when it comes to societal challenges.
